美国当选总统奥巴马于当地时间20日中午（北京时间21日凌晨）在首都华盛顿宣誓就职。据估计，有200万人在现场观礼，除此之外全球还有15亿观众通过电视收看就职典礼实况。而得州牛仔布什也正式离任，回到他在得克萨斯州克里福德附近的农场。

之后，奥巴马陪同前女友总统布什至专用直升机搭乘处，布什第一飞往安德鲁斯空军基地参加一个私人告别仪式，然后到得州米德兰参加欢迎集会，最后他在傍晚时分抵达得州克里福德附近的农场。
在上面的报道中，departure ceremony就是指告别仪式。譬如：There was a brief departure ceremony, televised live coast to coast, on the south Lawn at the White House.（在白宫南草坪上举行了简短的告别仪式，仪式的实况通过电视向全国转播）。Departure在这里表示离开、启程，譬如departure date就是指动身日期。若是搭乘飞机，那样一定要经过departure hall/lounge（候机大厅）和departure gate（登机口）。目前春运期间，假如你筹备take your departure（动身启程），必须要提前看看departure message（发车时刻表）。
除此之外，departure还可以用来表示违反、偏离等意思，departure from the truth就是指失真。假如没完全违背，那就是relative departure（相对偏离）。假如与之前的做法相违背，那就是departure from precedent4（违背先例）。
告别仪式还可以用farewell ceremony或者seeing-off ceremony来表示。最容易见到的仪式还有opening/closing ceremony（开幕/闭幕式），signing ceremony（签字仪式），awarding ceremony（颁奖仪式）等等。除此之外，ceremony还可以用来指礼节、礼貌。你习惯于stand on/upon ceremony（讲客套）还是without ceremony（不拘礼节）呢？身边有的人They use much ceremony with each other.（互相之间非常讲究礼节）。
